Electrical Engineering Simulation Study Ideas

MATLAB can be used to investigate questions in electrical engineering, but a useful study begins with a defined system and a question that can be tested. The following are proposed directions for student research. Each requires the student to select and document a model, assumptions, inputs and comparison method.

Distance protection and series compensation

Research question: How does the representation of a series compensation device affect the apparent impedance seen by a distance protection model?

Mohamed Zellagui and Abdelaziz Chaghi studied distance protection zones on a 400 kV transmission line with series FACTS devices and report using MATLAB for their simulations. A student could define a transmission-line model and compare a baseline case with a selected compensation case. The line, fault conditions and device representation would need to be specified before interpreting any comparison; the study is not a setting recommendation for an operating relay.

Reconfiguration of an ultracapacitor bank

Research question: How do the chosen series and parallel configurations change the simulated energy transfer from an ultracapacitor bank to a defined load?

A review by Akshay A. Kakde and Shrikrishna G. Tarnekar describes work by P. R. Sawarkar and colleagues on series and parallel recombination of an ultracapacitor bank and reports that the scheme was simulated in MATLAB Simulink. The review notes a static load in the work it discusses. A student would need to define the bank, switching conditions and load, and explain which quantities are compared. The original Sawarkar paper should be consulted before attempting to reproduce its study.

Energy management in a hybrid electric vehicle

Research question: How does a selected energy-management strategy distribute energy between a battery and an ultracapacitor over a defined vehicle operating scenario?

The same review discusses work by J. Moreno, M. E. Ortuzar and J. W. Dixon on battery and ultracapacitor energy management and reports a MATLAB simulation. A student could define the operating scenario, storage models and control strategy, then compare specified energy-flow quantities. The review describes that particular research; it does not establish that a proposed student model will reproduce its findings. Consult the original paper for its assumptions and methods.

Planning a study

For each question, identify the intended system boundary and what the model leaves out. Record parameter sources, initial conditions and evaluation criteria, and distinguish simulation observations from conclusions about real equipment. Software access and the components needed for a particular model should be established independently. These questions are starting points for study, not ready-made projects or code.
